Paris: The Memoir - Paris Hilton
“There are so many young women who need to hear this story. I don't want them to learn from my mistakes; I want them to stop hating themselves for mistakes of their own. I want them to laugh and see that they do have a voice and their own brand of intelligence and, girl, fuck fitting in.”
ππππ 4 out of 5 hearts!
This was not at all what I expected. Going in to this book I thought it would be tales of big parties and bigger celebrities. I was expecting the 'heiress' narrative that has been fed outwards to the masses since the 90s. What I was not expecting was heartbreak. Abuse. Isolation. This is not a story about privilege, this is a story about survival. I've always respected Paris' hustle. If you could say anything about her it was that she refused to disappear into the background. This memoir gave me a new level of respect for her. The things that she went through during her teenage years were a nightmare. So to be where she is today is remarkable. If you're looking for a lighthearted read or the inside scoop on Hollywood, this isn't it. This is a tell-all horror story about youth treatment facilities and the trauma that it instigates. I think everyone needs to read this, if not to raise your awareness of a shocking industry then at least to make you rethink your media fuelled opinions of the modern celebrity.
