The Grace Year - Kim Liggett
"We’re dangerous creatures. Full of devil charms. If given the opportunity, we will use our magic to lure men to sin, to evil, to destruction"
πππππ 5 out of 5 hearts!
A beautiful, dystopian novel about the strength of women and the dangerous mentality of the mob.
In Garner County where women have the magic of seduction, at 16 years old girls are sent away to release their magic into the wild. Upon return, the survivors are ready for their lives of child-bearing or hard labour. 16 year old Tierney James is fully prepared to return from her grace year and head straight to the labour house. If anything, it's her preference. But when her best friend Michael gifts her a veil, showing the entire county that she will be his bride, it sets in motion a series of events that puts the entire year of girls at risk..
I wish that I had read this in 2019 so I could call it book of the year, but instead I'll just have to call it the book of my year. For fans of Battle Royale or Lord of the Flies, author Kim Liggett has captured a coming of age story in the surrounds of a pre-industrial patriarchy. As a big fan of dystopian novels, I loved everything about this. However, a brief trigger warning is necessary due to the adult themes, gory moments and mention of suicide.
If you're going to read one book this year, make sure it's this one.
